CRICKET.
Notes by Round Ahjt.
There was a one innings match at WaiM on Saturday between two elevens chosen from Normanby and Waihi. A very fair pitch had been got ready off the turf ground, it being not quite ready for work. The teams were coached by Arden and Miller. The former won the toss, and sent in Beresford and Gray to the bowling ox Skeet and Griffiths, with Ashton at tbe wickets. The innings closed for 75. Miller's side then took the wickets, und were represented first by Riddiford and Miller, to the bowling of Gray and Arden, with Beresford at the wickets. With byes, &c, the innings closed for 50, WaiM losing the game by 25 runs. The fielding on both sides was very indifferent, and should recommend practice at every opportunity. A good many of the men will be in the twenty-two on Saturday, and will require to be in good trim to compete with the eleven.
I was glad to see a good muster on the Hawera ground. The eleven, seem bent on practice for the opening Match, and by what I saw of Fowler and Flint they are not to be trifled with.
I am sorry to see there is to be a parade of Volunteers on Saturday. It will be a great pity if both clash. I think the committee might arrange with Major Noake. I trust we shall have fine weather and a good muster. September 20, 1880.
