HAWERA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above committee was held on Thursday evening, in the schoolroom, at half-past seven p.m. Present — Eev. J.;Torry (chairman), Messrs. Hobbs, and Syme. ' The minutes of the previous meeting were read and. confirmed.

CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter from Mr. Mair, the teacher, ■tfas tead, stating that he was too ill to attend .to his duties at present. A certificate from Dr. Alexander to the same effect was handed in.

A circular was read from the secretary of the Education Board, which stated that the Government had decided to reduce* the capitation grant by one-half.— » The. Chairman said that this would reduce the income considerably, and the committee would have to be very careful about their expenditure for the future. — Mr. .Symey. thought the income would be so small that they ought to try and reduce the expenses as much as possible. They ■could not afford to pay so much for cleaning the school now.

Mr. Hobbs proposed that the school■cleaner be offered i'l2 per year instead of JBI6, but that he should only be called Upon to clean three times a Week, instead •of five times as at present ; such reduction to commence on the Ist, of next month;— Agreed, to. It .was also resolved that Mr.' Mair should be instructed to charge for all school material, except ink, used by the pupils. An account of Mr. Pulford's was passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
