Fifty more of the Wellington unemployed are on their way here, and are to be engaged on the earthwork formation of a further two miles of railway on tbe main line towards Hawera. This will make five miles in all between Hawera and Kakaramea junction.

A committee meeting of the Patea District Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Wednesday to fix a site for permanent show yards, &c, and to decide dates of next annual show and horse parade. Offers of ground were received from various persons, and that of Mr. H. J. Davis was accepted for a term of about 9£ years. The site chosen is a most convenient one for show purposes, being within ten minutes' walk of the centre of the town. The horse parade will take place on Saturday, 18th September, and the show on the 4th November. A programme is to be drawn up early next nipnth. Much, satisfaction was expressed at the amount of support accorded to the Association in your part of the district — nearly half of the names now on the register book being those of residents in Hawera and vicinity. It is to be hoped that the Association will produce a programme which will give general satisfaction. Yards will shortly be erected, and all preliminaries for the show attended to.

On Wednesday morning the ceremony of turning the first sod of the branch railway works took place on the south side of the river, near the end of the bridge. The principal residents of the town and district turned out en masse, invitations having been sent out by the contractors, Messrs. Downes, Procter, and Co., and the morning being fine, there was also a fair attendance of ladies. The chairman of the Harbor Board, Mr. G-. F. Sherwood, performed the operation of cutting the first sod in the most approved fashion ; and afterwards addressed the assemblage at some length on the progress and prospects of this district. Mr. Dale (chairman of the County Council), Mr. Williams, Mr. Hunter (Eesident Engineer), and Mr. Fergus, on behalf of the contractors, also spoke, the latter stating that. Southern people bad no idea as to the resources of the district. The company were entertained at lunch by Mr. Fergus, and success to the undertaking and to the contractors was drunk in bumpers of champagne.
