Carltle, Tuesday.
The accident to the s.s. Clyde, when attempting to leave the harbor in a heavy sea on Friday morning, was trifling, and was ot once put to rights. Had the weather moderated, the little steamer could have proceeded to sea with the next tide, but she is still weather bound.
On Saturday evening we had a terrific thunderstorm, accompanied by a deluge of rain. The river is much swollen, the upper wharf being totally submerged at bigb water on Sunday, and the fury of the gale appears to increase.
Contracts for supplying with meat and bread the men employed on the railway line have been let to Mr. William Colson and Mr. M. J. O' Sullivan. About 140 men are at work on the contract.
Earthwork operations on Messrs. Downes and Procter's branch railway contract will be commenced to-day by cutting the first sod.
Yesterday a large new lamp was placed in position in the Patea lighthouse. It is also intended to improve the hai'bor entrance further by a breakwater light, which will assist vessels in entering at night.
A ball takes place this evening in the Town Hall, under she auspices of the Harmonic Society.
