PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[Specially Telegraphed to Star.]

[pee united press association.]

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Monday, August 9. In the House of Representatives, today, the Hon. Mr. Hall announoed that the Government would abandon the following Bills : — Town Districts, Fisheries, Education Reserves Amendment, Public Entertainments Prohibition, Cemeteries, New Zealand University Reserves, Canterbury Reserves Amendment, Auctioneers, Fire and Marine Insurance Compani-s, Gaming and Lotteries, Hawkers and Pedlers, and Peace Preservation. The progress of the Native Land Sales Bill would depend on the clauses to be proposed by Sir George Grey. The second reading of the Representation Bill would be moved, and the House would have to decide whether it would be proceeded with or not. He would not press the Licensing Bill, if likely to take up much time. It seemed that most of the other Bills on the Order Paper were absolutely necessary, and he hoped to see the session close at the end of the month. On the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr. Moss moved an amendment about holding a convention to establish a system of local government. A desultory debate followed, lasting till one o'clock, when the House adjourned.

Tuesday, August 10. In the House of Representatives, today, the Pharmacy Bill was finally passed. Ten of the Bills indicated by the hon. the Premier yesterday were discharged from the Order Paper. ' The Premier promised, during the recess, to consider the question of restoring the franchiseto leaseholders. In settling -the Waimate Plains, the Government did not intend to found mili-

tary settlements, hut to open the land to the public. ' The debate was resumed on Mr. Moss's motion with reference to holding a convention to devise a system of local government, and was still proceeding when your message was despatched.
