THE TARANAKI HARBOR INQUIRY.

j Specially Telegraphed to Stab, j

(PEOM OTJB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, Friday Night. The Committees of both Houses have considered the harbor petition. The engineer and secretary to the New Plymonth Harbor Board arrived per s.s. Wanaka last week, and both have been examined, as well as the Hon. Major Atkinson and Mr. Thomas Kelly, member for New Plymouth. The Committee of the House of Representatives presented their report on Thursday, which was to the effect that if the New Plymouth Harbor Board have been expending money contrary to the provisions of the Harbor Act, or any special Act, 'the petitioners can obtain redress in the Supreme Court, as the law provides a remedy for-the grievances complained of by the petitioners. The Committee cannot recommend the House to take any special action in the matter of the petition.

It is rumored that other harbor boards are in a similar position. The subject is, therefore, a very delicate one. The question is likely to receive more attention in the Legislative Council, as the Hon. Mr. Waterhouse has given notice to ask the Hon. the Attorney-General, on Tuesday next, whether any portion of the land revenue set aside for the New Plymouth Harbor Board, under the Financial Arrangements Act, 187(8, has been used for any other purpose thau the payment of sinking fund upon loans, as provided for by the" New Plymouth Harbor Board Ordinance 1875 Amendment Act, 1877, and. if so, under what authority such expenditure has been incurred.
