Mr. Gladstone is suffering fz-om a slight congestion of the lungs, accompanied 'witli £ everisb symphozna. The promised French military commission, to undertake the re -organisation of the Greek army, has been abandoned.
The latest news from Afghanistan states that Ayoub Khan is quiescent, and has taken no steps to follow up his recent viceory.
General Buitows still continues defnsive measures, and has brought all his infantry to Oandahar. The Government have recalled Sir Bartle Frere from the Governorship of the Cape colony.
Later.
Mr. Gladstone is doing as well as can be expected, from the nature of his illness, but the feverish symptoms which accompany the congestion of his lungs still continue. Calcutta, August 2, Evening. The telegraph line has been cut between the Indian frontier and Cabul.
