CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
The adjourned meeting was held on Saturday, at Mr. Wanklyn's office, for the purpose of taking steps towards the erection of a church, and for the election of a church committee.
The Rev. Mr. Dasent explained the business of the meeting. They would have to appoint a church committee to take charge of the district, and also for the erection of the church. He would suggest that the committee should consist of four persons and himself. At Carlyle there was one churchman elected by the parishioners, another by the curate, and two vestrymen, elected by the parishioners. He had ft letter from Mr. Allen, of Normonby, offering two sections, if they would build a church there. Mr. Allen would give them one section, if they would buy the other. He (the rev. chairman) did- not see how that would answer, although it might be very desirable to have a church built both at Hawera and Normanby ; but as the bulk of the congregation lived in the former place, he did not think it would answer to build at Normanby at present.
Mr. Parrington was of opinion that it would be necessary to have a financial committee to manage the affairs of the church, as the Rev. Mr. Dasent had been in the habit of coming to Hawera without any defiuite arrangements being made as to his expenses. He proposed, — 11 That a church committee, or vestry, be appointed, consisting of the curate, two churchwardens, and two vestrymen." Mr. Tucker seconded the resolution.
The Rev. Mr. Dasent requested Mr. Hobbs to act as his churchwarden, and that gentleman consented. Mr. Perry was appointed parishioners' churchwarden ; and Messrs. Nicholas and Morecroft were elected vestrymen. Some discussion took place as to the best Bite for the church. The rev. Chairman said he considered that as the Bishop had already purchased a site for them, it
would only be an act of courtesy to erect the building upon it. Mr. Perry proposed, and Mr. Hobbs seconded — " That the church should be built on the site near the proposed railway station, which had been given to them by the Bishop." Mr. Par.ington supported the resolution. The only obiection to it was that the street was a little muddy; but he considered that any inconvenience arising from that source would be put up with. The only question was, whether they could put up a church for £200, which he very much doubted. Mr. White was very much opposed to building the church on that site. It was outside the town, and likely to be in that position for some years to come. Mr. Wanklyn did not think the site would be a suitable one ; but, if sold, a good deal of money could be realised from it. The rev. Chairman said they had a difficulty in raising enough money for the building of the church, and if they added £60 or £70 more for a site, it would only make matters worse.
The resolution was then put and carried.
After some discussion, Mr. Parrington moved — " That the church committee be empowered to take steps toward the erection of the church on the site fixed by the present meeting, as soon as they can see their way to raise sufficient funds for the purpose." Mr. Perry seconded the motion, which was carried.
Mr. Hobbs gave a financial explanation as to how matters stood in connection with the church services that had been held. He said that since the Rev. Mr. Dasent had been holding services here, £10 had been collected, out of which £11 13s had been paid to the rev. gentleman, and £1 16s Gd for books. There was still a balance hi hand of £2 19s 3d, besides some books that had not yet been disposed of.
A vote of thanks to the rev. chairman concluded the business.
