TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

(From the TaranaM Herald.) The Board met on Monday. Present— The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs. Standish and Syme. . SWAMP LAND. The application of Messrs. Campbell Brothers for 640 acres of the~Ngaire swamp was considered. On the motion of Mr. Syme, seconded by Mr. Crompton, it was resolved, — " That the Chief Surveyor be requested' to lay off two sections each of 320 acres (reserving one chain on each side of the Mangawhero stream) to be offered for sale on terms of deferred payment, hi accordance with Messrs. Campbell Brothers' application." RETURN OF LAND. A return of land sold during the month of June was read, which showed that the following had been disposed of: — 5 rural sections, containing 307 acres, at the rate of £1 14s lOd per acre ; 2 suburban sections, containing 12 acres, at £4 ss. per acre ; 26 town sections, at £38 10s per acre. On deferred payment: 81 rural sections, containing 6979 acres, at the rate of £2 12s 3d per acre. Total value sold, £19,099 15s 2d. Total value of land sold for the year, £24,766 8s 2d. DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND. A memo, was read from the Undersecretary of Crown Lands, stating that the Minister of Lands had acceded to the application of the Board to have certain sections in the Moa,' Manganui, and Ngaire Districts withdrawn from the cash system, and opened on deferred payments. A telegram was also read stating that the Governor had signed the proclamation setting apart the land for that purpose. Mr. Standish moved, and Mr. Crompton seconded, — " That hi cases in which more than one application is received, the sections be sold at the Town Hall, Hawera, at 11 a.m., on the 15th September, by the Commissioner. LAND SALES AT HAWERA. A telegram was read from Captain Wray, District Land Officer, Hawera, stating that the difficulties re deferred payment land sales at Hawera could be obviated by confining applications to Carlyle and Hawera; that he could attend 1 once a week to receive applications at Hawera. He proposed in future to arrange to pay the deposit money to unsuccessful applicants at Hawera after

the sale by remaining there the following day for that purpose. The Commissioner was instructed to write to Captain Wray, pointing out the difficulties of. the course proposed by him, which, would only tend to retard business, and be less convenient to the public. RECEIVER OF LAND REVENUE AT HAWERA. A letter was read from Mr* R. Thompson, Receiver of Land Revenue, New Plymouth, making the following recommendations : — That Land Officers be appointed at Hawera and Carlyle to receive applications, noting time, &c. ; that the agents there inform the applicants that they must either get a post office order or bank drafts for their amounts ; and that the Land Officers there forward the moneys, with applications, to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Ply<mouth, which in due course will find its way to this office. As to the return of moneys to unsuccessful applicants, let the Land Officers inform the applicants that their deposits will either be paid on personal application to the Receiver of Land Revenue, New Plymouth, or that he will forward it to their address, deducting, of course, the cost of post office order or bank draft. Mr. Standfsh moved, and Mr. Syme seconded, " That it is obviously in the public interest, and would greatly facilitate the business relative to the sale of the Crown lands of this district, that an officer be appointed'at Hi-wera for receiving applications as a District Land Officer ; and that the appointment of Receiver at Carlyle be cancelled, and in lieu thereof the suggestions contained in the letter of the Receiver of Land Revenue at New Plymouth be recommended to the Government for adoption. — Carried. APPLICATIONS TO PURCHASE. The following applications to purchase were allowed : — Robert R. Sangster, section 23, block 10, Ngaire, containing 51 acres ; F. Harrison, section 51, block 10, Ngaire, containing 72 acres. The Board then adjourned.
