CARLYLE.

M(from our own correspondent^) Carlyle, Friday. On Tuesday evening, after inspection parade, a meeting of the Patea Bifle Volunteers was held, Captain Tregear presiding-. The latter having- intimated Ms intentiorl of resigning his captaincy, Mr. John Black was unanimously elected to take command of the company. A finance committee was appointed, consisting of Captain Black and Lieutenant Fraser (ex officio), and five other members of the company. -Major Noake's opinion was asked for and obtained on several questions relating to Government capitation. He pointed out, for the benefit of several who ceased to be volunteers at the late amalgamation of companies, that the grant was the property of the corps, not of individdual members. A new uniform will shortly be ordered, consisting of red tunics, with black facings, black trousers, and helmet with spike and plume. On Tuesday, twenty-three of the Wellington unemployed arrived by the Clyde, and the following day were drafted up the Patea river to an encampment, near the Junction Station. There is a desire felt to form a boating club here this coming season, and a meeting has been called for Saturday week to arrange preliminaries. On Thursday and yesterday a bazaar in aid of the Roman Catholic Church fund was held in the Town Hall. The room was tastefully decorated with evergreens and bunting, and had quite a festive appearance. Proceedings commenced at a little after two on Thursday afternoon, and that evening was well advanced ere business ceased for the day. A continuous and ever - changing crowd of purchasers thronged the somewhat limited space laid off for promenading 1 , there being a fair attendance of the " dusky race/ male and female. Still further to enliven the scene, a piano (kindly lent for the occasion) was in constant requisition. The usual number of raffles, lucky-bags, and other attendants of bazaars, were duly patronised, and, as a proof of the diligence of the lady vendors, it is satisfactory to note that the sum of £61 was realised from the first day's sale. Yesterday the bazaar waß continued, and in the evening the usual auction was held. The total amount realised is not yet known, but the estimate is quite satisfactory. The four goods stalls were superintended by Mesdames J. Whelan, Mullen, Burke, and McKenzie, assisted by Mesdames Cheyne, K. Whelan, Hughes, Kennedy, Cowern, and Misses Brown and Copeland. The arrangements were of a first-class character, and reflected the greatest credit on the promoters. The bazaar will be supplemented to-morrow evening by a miscellaneous entertainment in the Town Hall, in aid of the same -fund. The .first jpart^will? be musical — the second part dramatic. Several members of the Patea Harmonic Society have given their services, and the programme includes instrumental and vocal solos and concerted pieces. The second part is to be occupied by the trial scene from " Pickwick," which will be played by "members, of the Patea Garrick Club. Judging from the rehearsal, this will be a performance much above the average of amateur dramatics. • With the exception of the settlement of the great Kaitangiwhenua case, the business of the Native Land Court is nearly over. A block of land 21,200 acres, situated on the Patea river somewhere behind Normanby, has been purchased from the natives, on behalf of a private company, for the sum of .£2650, or at the rate of 2s. 6d. per acre.
