PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[per united press association.]

[Specially Telegraphed to Star.]

HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES.

2 Monday, July 12. . * - In the House to-day, the resolution, not to sit after 12.30, was, after considerabl ■ debate, rescinded.

.The evening sitting. was taken up by a debate on the Civil Service Commissioners' Report.

Mr. Saunders, in moving for the papers relating to it, supported the statements of the report, and quoted from evidence to show that they were justified in what they stated.

Mr. Macandrew stigmatised^ the. statements of the report as slanderous, and as being intended to injure the ladr Government.

The Hon. Mr. Oliver said that it wouldbe premature for the Ministry to express any opinion, as they had not had time to consider the evidence yet. Mr. Kelly supported the report. Messrs. Gisborne, Thompson, and others condemned it.

Ultiiniitely, the motion for papers was agreed to, and the House rose at one o'clock.

Tuesday, July 13.

In the House to-day, it was stated that there was no intention to remove the site of the Timaru railway station.

The 10 per cent, reduction would apply to salaries and pensions under permanent Acts, but not to the judges.

The Government had not made any provision for the families of the Maori prisoners. It is believed that Te Whiti had provided for them.

It was not intended to alter the electoral law by restoring the leasehold franeliise.

On the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr. Ballance went into figures to show that the paper on the table showing that the expenditure of the late Government had been eleven millions in two years, was incorrect.

The Hon. Major Atkinson replied, maintaining the correctness of the return.

In Committee of Supply, the item, " Registrars of Electors, £'3(500," was reduced bj r £240, a motion to reduce it by .£4OO being lost on a division by the chairman's casting vote.
