CARLYLE.

Carlyle, Tuesday.
On Friday last, at the meeting of the Town Board, two new members — Messrs. Sherwood and Dixon — took their seats. Mr. J. Milroy was unanimously re-elected chairman.
The adjourned meeting of the Patea Steam Shipping Company, which was held on the same day, was thinly attended. The annual report and balance-sheet for the year ended 31st March last, were received and adopted. In the report of the meeting, which appears in Saturday's Patea Mail, the net profit of the steamer is stated to be £1150. This statement is incorrect, although justifiable by the wording of the report, which erroneously uses the word " net " instead of " gross." After writiug off £687 15s. sd. depreciation, and £224 4s. 4d., cost of an arbitration case, the net profit was £227 12s 4d, and this latter sum was arriv d at by valuing the steamer at £5000, and 4 unallotted shares at their full paid-up value, £200. The directors hold out a hope that an inte^H^.dividend will be declared at the end of September, and that they will then be able to lay before the shareholders a satisfactory statement of affairs. lam indebted to the courtesy of the manager for these particulars. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Harbor Board took place yesterday. Amongst oth r important business, a resolution was passed to the following effect : — " That, notwithstanding the expressed opinion of Government re wharves, the Board is still of opinion that increased wharfage accommodation is at present required on the west bank of the Patea river, and would again ask the Government to give effect to the former application." Tenders are invited for construction of the railway wharf, and formation of half-a-mile of the permanent way.
Your correspondent's information as to the vagaries of the presiding J.P. last week, in the debt case, is oontradioted in our.ltfoaljjajler. The .reporter, probably,
*
did not catch the words that fell from tha J.P.s lips sotto voce, or perhaps" 1 taaV gentleman is making 1 amends for" the part he is reported to have taken in the matter of a recent inquest held^on an " effigy " . here. It is hard to say. ] *'■'•■
