THE DOCTOR AND THE " SPECIAL."

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.

Sib, — As Mr. Croumbie Brown at list confesses his error in " having mixed up the case of Whitney with l hat of Wallace " — persons who lived thirty miles apart, — and as a death he reported at Waihi, which never oc- < irred at all, was the only question i tween us, I suppose I must be satisi\ d with his singularly graceless ; jiology for a libellous misstatement. His other innumerable niisappre- ]•. nsions, I have little inclination to i «.tify — except his mistake in supposi:\'j it any "comfort" to know that he is afraid of a Taranaki, or any other, <• liu-t or jury ; or that persons whom h ■ has libelled are in no danger of i\ -lions at law for contradicting him. ] f is a plausible dodge of certain per- >• uj who attack you to reverse the i . Is and as«>unif that they ihew- -. w.s are hrutally assailed. (Vid>i j& .o}/d Fables.) ill*. Brown renders

us familiar with a style of composition known as bunkum.

It is no small compliment to Mr. Brown's literary skill, that his letters are generally read with interest, notwithstanding his facility for misrepresentation or misapprehension. But fiction is not without its charm, and we have mock histories, as well as mock inquests and funerals, and Baron Munchausen will doubtless still be read, though every word be known to be untrue. — I am, &c, W. F. Keating, M.D. Carlyle, June 3.
