POLITICAL GOSSIP.

[Specially Telegraphed to Star.]

(FBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, Tuesday night.

I have reason to believe that among the other reductions to be proposed by the Colonial Treasurer to-night, one important reduction of at least 5 per cent, on all salaries above a certain amount — probably above .£3OO will be proposed.

Major Atkinson has been taking an hnmense amount of labor over his Budget, and returns have been in preparation for him in several departments for some tune.

Great exertions have been made to get the Financial Statement ready by tonight. There never was a more lively occasion for a Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand than the present. On the whole, however, the Government have certainly gained strength since the session began.

The Licensing Bill was brought forward by Mr. Dick in a long and able speech to-day.

At a caucus, held yesterday, it was decided to make some important modifications hi the Property Assessment Tax.
