[PEB "UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Tuesday night. At the inquest held to-day on the body of Martha Lockhart, who died under suspicious circumstances on Friday night, the evidence showed that her husband was in the habit of ill-treating her, and had struck her the night before her death. A verdict of manslaughter was returned against the husband, Charles Lockhart, who was committed for trial. Wellington, Tuesday night. The Licensing Court sat to-day. Renewals were granted •in the case of fiftynine hotels, but three applications for new licenses were refused. A carter named Stephen Fitchett was killed this afternoon. He was driving a loaded dray up to the farm where he was employed, when he fell off, it is supposed, by a sudden jerk. The wheel passed over his head, causing instantaneous death. Nelson, Tuesday night. The body of John Kruse, supposed to have been drowned hi the Waimea river, was discovered on Sunday about a mile and a half below where he attempted to ford the river. An inquest was held last night at Appleby, when a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. The de- i ceased leaves a wife and several young children.
