THE KELLY GANG.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
[Reutee's Special to Stab.] Melbourne, Tuesday. In connection with the report that traces of the Kellys had been discovered, it has transpired that a large body of police left Benalla (a township near the Strathbogie ranges, where the Kellys have for some time past been supposed to be hiding) on special service, but particulars regarding the same are withheld. It is reported that the police are on the track of the Kellys. Preparations for going out after them were being made at Benalla yesterday. According to latest advices from Mauritius, freights to the colonies are at 255. to 30s. The stock of sugar on hand is 10,000 tons. Sydney, Tuesday. The alarmist report with reference to the Geine (alleged to be on a filibustering expedition) is denied by the representative here of the Marquis de Rays. He explains that the vessel merely conveys a colonising party to New Ireland, and her cargo consists of machinery and tools. The alarm is probably due to the fact that there is a corps of 211 gendarmes on board.
