At an inquest held to-day on the recent fire at Mrs. Alexander's boarding house, an open verdict was returned. The evidence given was to the effect that the building and furniture were over-insured. The coroner spoke strongly against the ■ conduct of the insurance companies in over-insuring buildings, as holding out a .temptation to arson. Napier, Friday night. " Wm. Collins, a groom, attempted to commit suicide this morning. He put the muzzle of a gun under his chin and pulled the trigger. At a luncheon given by the Corporation on Wednesday, to celebrate the opening of the railway into Blenheim, Mr. Seymour, M.H.R., spoke briefly on the political situation, expressing full confidence in the present Ministry. He announced that instructions had been given for the survey of the railway extension to Awatere, and hoped the contract would be carried out for the amount of vote.
