THE SYDNEY EXHIBITION
BROUGHT TO A CLOSE.

Sydney, Tuesday. The International Exhibition, which had been open for seven months, was formally closed to-day by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Augustus Loftus, in accordance with the programme which was issued, and in presence of a large number of people^
The Executive Commissioners' address to his Excellency, which was read at the closing of the ceremony, stated that the exhibits had numbered 14,000, to which 7070 awards had been given, including 2753 first-class, and 2082 second-class.
The admission during the seven months had reached a total of 1,022,000.
The receipts had been under £50,000, but it was hoped that that sum would pay working expenses.
Sydney, Tuesday.
The Union Company's steamship Arawata arrived from New Zealand yesterday.
A delegate, holding a thousand Melbourne proxies, has arrived here, for the purpose of opposing thh abolition of voting by proxy, which will be proposed at the Mutual Provident Society's meeting to-morrow. His Excellency the Governor has assented io the Education Bill which was introduced by the Government.
Newcastle, Tuesday.
The masters offer three and sixpence for hewing, and when coal is at ten shillings, a rise or fall of twopence or threepence in ,the shilling on the selling price. The miners have consented to consider the offer, but it is unlikely that they will agree to accept it

It is understood that the Government have received an offer from an English Company to lay a cable from
Ceylon to Point Parker, in the G-ulf of Carpentaria. Melbourne, Tuesday. Much speculation continues regarding the appointment to the Speakership of the Legislative Assembly, but nothing certain is yet known on the subject. Diphtheria continues to exist in a severe form at Hamilton, and the same disease is spreading in the township of Avenel. Eeports are gaining ground that Mr. Murray Smith will probably be offered the Agent-Generalship. The sugar market is very active. Adelaide, Tuesday. The Orient seeamship Cuzco has arrived from Plymouth. Flour is worth ,£lO 2s 6d per ton.
