HAWERA ROAD BOARD.

Saturday. 3bd April. The usual monthly meeting was held on Saturday last. Present — Messrs. Hunter (chairman), Morrison, Gane, Illston, and Morecroft. CORRESPONDENCE. ; ■ From the Treasury Department, stating that the last subsidy, amounting to £121, had been paid into tbe Bank to the credit of the Board. From Galvin and Co., proprietors Hawera and Normanby Star, applying for a share of the advertisirg in connection with the Board. — .Received. From W. Cowern, Carlyle, asking for a refund of £15 12s 6d, which he had expended in opening up a track to his land, fronting the Allen road, but which had been used by the settlers in the neighborhood. — It was resolved that the application could not be entertained. From John West, stating that the additional work required on the Pain road, in order to make the present contract useful for the purpose intended — namely, to give Messrs. lllston and Holgerson a dray and pack road to their sections — would be as follows :—: — Six chains of additional side cutting near Holgerson's whare, made about 10 feet wide, at a cost of about £1 per chain ; and at the rise of the spur, 12 or 14 chains beyond Holgerson's whare, about 7 chains of side cutting, 6 feet wide, at a cost of about £1 per chain. The alterarequired wonld cost £15. — Messrs. Gane and lllston were empowered to make the | necessary alterations in the present contract, the expenditure not to exceed £10. ROAD CONTRACTS. Mr. Twigg reported that about half the work had been finished on West and Mills' road, but he considered that too much scrub had been left. There would be a deviation of about 25 chains on West road, as it would be difficult to cany a road straight through. Fifty chains of gravel would be required on the Ketemarae road, to make it passable during the winter. INGAHAPE BOAD CONTRACT. Mr. Ulston proposed that Mr Pearce's contract should be taken over, and a cheque paid to the contractor. — Carried. SURVEY OF THE NEW WHAKAMAEA BLOCK. The following resolution was carried unanimously : — " The Board having been informed that the Chief Surveyor would be requested to survey the deviation in the new Whakamara Block, resolved, — That the Hon. the Minister for Public Works be requested to provide the funds for the surveys of the other deviations, and the expenses of exchanging lands ; the Board undertaking to provide the compensation for the l<&nd require for new roads; and that the Chairman toe requested bring the matter before the Minister for Public Works." TENDERS. The following tenders wereaccepted : — Pain Road contract (scrubbing and bush felling) — Accepted : J. West, 3a per chain. Declined: H. Butler, L6O; Brewer and Davis, 6s per chain.

No. 2 contract, Mill's Road (side cutting and bridge over Otoki Stream) — Accepted: J. West, LSS. Declined: Brewer and Davis, L 12 9; Percival and Johnston, L 11 5; P. O'Connor, Lllß. ENGINEER TO THE BOARD. It was resolved that Mr. McKenzie's application for the office should be held over. The Chairman was instructed to try and make arrangements with Mr. John Twigg to act, the salary not to exceed 15s a day. DEVIATION OF WEST BOAD. Mi*. Gane moved that Mr. Twigg be instructed to lay off the deviation on West road. — Carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts, amounting to £125, were passed for payment.
