Hutt Valley Pipe Band

The Hutt Valley Pipe Band will play at Petone Beach on Sunday at 3 p.m. A very fine programme has been arranged.

Hutt Valley Drainage Board Mr. E. W. Wise, Mayor of Eastbourne, has been elected to represent the Eastbourne Borough Council on the Hutt Valley Drainage Board.

Accounts amounting to £17,052 10s Id were passed for payment at the last meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board.

College Board of Governors Following the recent report of anomalies in the election of local body representatives on the Board of Governors of the Hutt Valley Technical College at Petone the question of Upper Hutt representation is to be raised by Upper Hutt Borough Council delegates at the next meeting of the joint conxmittee of Hutt Valley and Bays local bodies.

Commerce Examinations

Through the efforts of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry a small centre was established in Lower Hutt for the recent Chamber of Commerce examinations. .Eight or nine students took the examinations, which ran\_ smoothly. Students were pleased that they did not have to go in to Wellington for the examinations.

Y.W.C.A. Summer Camps A few vacancies exist for the Y.W.C.A. summer camps for girls sixteen years and over. The camps, which will commence on December 24, will be held at Queen Charlotte Sound, Pelorus Sound, and Motueka. All kinds of holiday attractions will be provided. Those interested should enrol with Miss Beryle White, Hutt Valley Y.W.C.A.

Bad Spelling Listeners to some of the quiz sessions over the air are often amazed at the lack of general knowledge displayed by the contestants and the poor spelling. One contestant was asked to spell "tantalise" and "embarrassment" the other night. He spelt the first "tantilise" and started off with "embra" for the latter. Another, contestant gave "harrass" •for "harass." Spelling seems to be almost a lost art these days!

"Blue Baby" Cured Don McGuffog (B) will be able to "drive" liis aeroplane," says a Sydney paper. Don was a blue baby, living with his parents at Tamworth, and arrangements were made for an operation at the Royal Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. -He arrived back in Sydney completely cured. A large crowd greeted him on his return to Tamworth by train. Don's ambition in life in to "drive" a Constellation. He has given Melbourne away "because it was too cold to eat ice creams." ,'

Technical School Pipe Bartd Eight sets of pipes for the newlyformed pipe band at the Palmerston North Technical High School arrived from Scotland recently.

Bells for Hamilton Cathedral An appeal for £1250. for six bells to make a peal of eight in the tower of St. Peter's Cathedral. Hamilton, is to be launched shortly.

Carols by Candlelight Carol singing by candlelight will be a feature of the Christmas celebrations in New Plymouth. The gathering will take place in" the arena in lovely PukekuraJPark.

Reduction in Tyre Prices ~" A further reduction in motor tyre prices was forecast by Mr. J. E. Peach (Napier) at a meeting of the council of the North Island Motor Union in Wellington.

Injured by Bag of Sugar ' When a 1401 b bag of sugar fell on his neck and shoulders, Erie Henderson, Lower Hutt, received injuries to the back of his neck and shoulders. He was admitted .; to Hutt Hospital.

Power Board Inspections Re-inspections carried out by the Hutt Valley Electric Board .last month totalled 26, making a total to date this year of 497. The testdepartment handled 1791 meters idtiring the month. -"

Chrysanthemums Out of Season An exhibit that aroused much interest at. the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's show last week was a cluster of reddish-bronze chrysanthemums. These were very much out of season.

Consolidation of Awards A meeting will be held in Wellington next month to discuss the consolidation of awards, which at present overlap- in -some trades. Trades unions as well as employers are interested in the matter.

£338 from Community "Sing" The final community "sing" for the season took place at Dunedin recently, £338 being raised for the Food for Britain Fund. Since the "sings" were started some years ago over £40,000 has been raised for good causes. '-■[■.

Charge to Technical College The Petone Borough Council decided at its last meeting to charge the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College £2OO a year for the general use of the Petone Recreation Ground. The charge covers the college's everyday use of the ground, for sport and as a playing ground.

Rose Thanksgiving Service A rose thanksgiving service -was held last Sunday at the Taranaki Street Methodist Churchy Wellington. Members of the Wellington Rose Society decorated the pulpit, and the preacher was a member of the society, the Rev. W. H. Greenslade. '■■'■-'*■>
