The Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, has been elected patron of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
Sir Patrick Duff, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, will open the Wellington Horticultural Society's Rose Show today.
The Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. E. P. Hay, is still indisposed, and was unable to . attend Monday night's meeting of the City Council. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. W. C. Gregory, presided over the meeting and expressed the hope, that Mr. Hay would soon be restored to health.
Satisfaction ' was expressed at Monday night's meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council that Councillor B. Matthews, who has been seriously ill, was well enough to leave hospital last week, and hopes to be present at the next meeting of the Council.
Mr. I. R. Robinson, general man-ager-engineer of the Hutt Vallejt Electric Power, Board, and Mr. S. Blackley, a member of the Board, have been attending a conference of Power Board representatives at Mount Buffalo, South Australia.
Mr. H. G. Lewis, president of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will leave on December 3 on a two months' visit to Australia.
Mi-, and Mrs. Maurice Ralph, of Lower Hutt, will be passengers on the first voyage of the Wanganella to Sydney, sailing about December 10.
Mr. A. W. McDonald, Clerk of the Court at Lower Hutt, is on holiday in the South Island. He is due back on November 29.
Mr. R. H. Nimmo returned to Lower Hutt last week after a tour of Britain, the United States and Canada. With him was Mrs. Nimmo(formerly Miss Sybil Murdoch), to whom he was married at Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland, on August 7. Before her marriage Mrs. Nimmo was supervisor of nursing appointments in the Ministry of Labour Office, Glasgow, for 16 years.
Mr. G. W. Cairns, of Lower Hutt. judged six classes of roses at a show evening held by the Wellington Rose Society.
Mr. F. R. Bodle, of Lower Hutt, returned from a visit to the United States last week.
Mr. W. M. Sorensen, who has,been attached to the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington, has been appointed accountant at Petone. i
Mr. H. Saunders, who is a patient in Wellington Hospital, was granted extended leave at the last meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board.
Mr. Maurice' Ralph was a visitor to Christchurch for the New Zealand Cup season.
Mr. Brian Snowden, a journalist formerly stationed in Lower Hutt, has written a one-act play, "When the Trumpet Shall Sound," which will be staged with two others by W.E.A. players in Wellington this week.
Mrs. M. Dunn, of Lower Hutt, has returned from a visit to Australia. While in Adelaide she attended the wedding of her brother, Mr. Kelvin Patterson, in Adelaide.
Mr. E. W. Nicolaus, Mayor of Upiier Hutt, and Councillor A. L. Gears have been appointed to represent the Upper Hutt Borough Council on the newly-constituted Hutt Valley Drainage Board.
A photograph of the late Mr. H. Green,. Mayor of Petone from May, 19 44, to November 1947, was unveiled by the present Mayor, Mr. A. M. Macfarlane, at the last meeting of the Petone Borough Council. A copy of the photograph was handed to Mrs. Green.
Mr. D. Watson, traffic inspector a Petone, was presented with a set ,o carvers by the Petone Borough Coun cil to mark his marriage, whien tool place on Saturday.
