INDOOR BOWLS

v WOMEN’S CLUB FORMED

Fifty-two women from all parts of the Hutt Valley from Petone to Upper Hutt met at the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt, to form the Hutt Valley Afternoon Women’s Indoor Bowling Club. To most of the women the game was quite new and after a demonstration game was played by women members of the Hutt Valley Indoor Bowling Association and details of the game and the scoring were explained all present were given a practical introduction to the game by playing in a team with the experienced players. Mr. J. Jardin, president of the Hutt Valley Indoor Bowling Association, was present, and assured the women that indoor bowling was one of the forest games for women and that women made excellent bowlers. Mr. Jardin also said that the fact had been proved repeatedly and that when women’s teams were matched at tournaments against men’s teams it was not uncommon for the women to be the victors. The meeting was organised by Miss D. Gillies, of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Branch, and the following interim officers were elected from the foundation members of the new club:—President, Mrs. E. W. Irwin; secretary, Mrs. S. Weatherhead; committee, Mesdames G. Garrett, O. Gray, M. Johnston, T. Cosgrave and L. G. Turner.
