WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

BELMONT BRANCH Miss Presants presided at the June meeting of the Belmont branch of the Women’s Institute, and welcomed a large attendance of members.

The programme was in the hands of town members. Mrs. Inch delighted all with her singing of several songs and Mrs. Turner gave two entertaining recitations. Mrs. Hill gave an interesting travel talk on a trip by boat that she had taken from Suva to the most northern island in the group north of Suva.

A tablecloth, beautifully embroidered in flowers to represent the four seasons of the year, was displayed. It was the gift of West Moors Women’s Institute in appreciation of food parcels sent each month. Mrs. Isherwood won the overseas parcel.

The singing of “God Defend New Zealand” brought a happy meeting to a close.

EPENI BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Epuni branch of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs. Woodrow, there being a very good attendance of members. After the business for the month was completed the afternoon took the form of a social afternoon.

Members were greatly entertained by the Drama Circle in a one-act play, “Grandmas Are So Simple.” Two visitors, Mrs. Allen Brown and Mrs. Ferron, sang delightfully. At the May meeting the members had a very instructive talk by Mrs. Poison on gardening. The result of the monthly competition, “best sand posy,” was Mrs. McGee 1, Mrs. Love 2; best bloom competition, Mrs. Turner 1, Mrs. Prestridge 2. Next month’s competition will be an article made from 2oz of wool and a demonstration of the making of skin gloves. Mrs. Woodrow, president, expressed thanks to the visiting performers and presented each with shoulder sprays. “God Save the King ;> brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.
