The Hutt News Wednesday, June 23, 1948. AN UNSIGHTLY PATCH
If any town in New Zealand has a more dreary-looking patch in its centre than that between the real of the Lower Hurt Post Office and the river stopbank the writer has yet to see it. ■ Surely it is time something was done to bring about an improvement in that locality, especially as it is the disembarking point for many visitors. One haidly likes to think what these visitors’ first impressions of the city must Of course one realises that it is a “new” area, with roads and footpaths in the making and big building schemes in prospect. But possibilities of the future should not allow this ugliness of the present to persist year; after year. Expensive permanent schemes are not called for, but a levelling and tidying up of the area, with perhaps the sowing of lawns and the planting of annuals, is long overdue. For some time a signboard pointing the Way to the Social Security and Pensions Department has been almost hidden by long weeds. The recent planting of the strip along the centre of Andrews Avenue has made a big difference to its appearance and is an illustration of what a difference a tidying up and a little planting make. The present appearance of the area at the 'rear of the Post Office and in the vicinity of the bus terminal calls for immediate improvement. Other patches in the city, including the Wligh Street entrance to Ridcii-ford-Park, also call for beautification.
