Commerce Chamber

NEW COUNCIL MEETS SUB-COMMITTEES APPOINTED Tlie first meeting of tlie newlyelected council of the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce , and Industry was held on Thursday night, the new president, Mr. H. G. Lewis, occupying the chair.

The president welcomed new members, Messrs. H. W. Tingey, 15. Orillin and H. V. Marsh. He asked for* the co-operation of members, and said that iie looked forward tq working with them during the coming term.

Mr. E. A. Tomkies, on behalf of the older members, welcomed the president back to the Chamber, stating that Mr,. Lewis had done valuable work in the past.

Appreciation of the work done by two retiring members, Messrs. C. Griffin and H. Guthrie, was placed on record. Mr. K. K. Watts said that Mr, Griffin was the first president of, the , Chamber, and he and Mr. Guthrie were foundation members. They were two of the soundest men in the, Hutt Valley, and both had done a tremendous amount of work for the Chamber.

Sub-Committees Appointed

The following sub-committees were appointed on Immigration Welfare Committee, Mr. N. T. Gillespie; Aid to Britain and retailers’ representative, Mr. W. Giltrap; rehabilitation, Mr. C. E. Moran; commercial, Messrs. N. K. Davidsdn and W. Giltrap; manufacturing, all the manufacturers’ •representatives on the council, Mr. L. J. Donaldson as convenor; legislation, Mr. N. T. Gillespie; finance, president (Mr. H. G. Lewis), secretary (Mr. L. V. Phillips), and past president (Mr. N. T. Gillespie); membership, Messrs. E. A. Tomkies, A. C. Brockelsby and H. V. Marsh. Gratification was expressed at the great success of the last annual meeting, which the president . said set a high standard and created a very fine impression. He congratulated everyone concerned, especially the secretary, Mr. Phillips.

It was stated that members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, bank chiefs and other' visitors had been much impressed by the high standard of the function.
