The R.A.F. Aged 30

FORMED TO STOP GERMANS In April the Royal Air Force was 30 years old. Created in the dark days of 1918, when the Germans were mounting their great offensive to try to seise the Channel ports in France, the new service united the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps. The creation of this separate service came about on the recommendations contained in General Smuts’s official report of August, 1917. By the end of 1918 the R.A.F. numbered 291,000 men and 125,000 women. In 1920 this number had Deen reduced to less than a tenth of the wartime total. The air arm is going through the same process ( again. » At present the regular strength of the Royal Air Force is in the region of 100,000. It is hoped to build this figure up in 1949 to 130,000 men and 18,000 women in the regular Force.
