Hutt Garden Circle
GIFT TO RETIRING CHAIRMAN In spite of showery weather 60 people attended the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society’s Garden Circle at the residence of Mr. William Smith, Waterloo Road, for a demonstration in pruning small fruits. Mr. Smith enumerated the varieties of small fruits that grew well in the Hutt. and then demonstrated how a gooseberry bush should be pruned as a bush and in the espalier system. Elaclc currants were treated next, followed by raspberries. All through the process Mr. Smith ably replied to the many questions put to him.
At the conclusion of the demonstration the members went indoors, where Mrs. Smith, assisted by the members of the committee, dispensed afternoon tea in a cheery atmosphere, brightened by blazing wood fires. Mr. W. H. Wilson, on behalf of the Circle, presented Mr. Smith with the book “Colour in the Garden,” by Stebbings, and a reading lamp, and to Mrs. Smith the book “Flower Decoration,” by Constance Spry, to show their appreciation to them for all they had done for the Circle.
Mr. Smith, who has retired from the chairmanship of the Circle, thanked the members for their kindly action and said he had been the Circle’s chairman since 'its commencement in 1935. Mrs. Smith, in thanking the Circle, said her association with it had always been a happy one. Mr. W. H. Wilson has been elected the new chairman.
