Consistent with tin* Wellington Acclimatisation Society's policy of stocking barren waters in the Dominion itgdonated 5000 brown trout fry for despatch to the Chatham Islands. This was done at tlx* request of Mr. G 1,. Hutton, of “Bangor,” Canterbury. an owner of property on Hie island which lias suitable water for t i-otii Fry was sent from Wellington by seaplane, lull owing lo an extreme difference in temperature at an altitude of Xftftft feel many of them succumbed, and at one stage it was thought that all would die. When tlx* plane descended to an altitude of lixio fori, however, those that were rail dead recovered and ultimately were distributed in tlx* st roams.
Prom information received there are indications that brown trout have been established in I lx* island. in that small brown fishes about 2!• indies long have been seen where no fish of any kind have been seen before—and so another milestone in acclimatisation.
So tar as is known, this is tlx* first attempt to transfer live (ish from one point to another by ah 1 .
