LOWER HUTT'S NAME

(To the Editor.) Sir.■■•"What's in a name.'" A mental picture is in a name. "Roso" brings a picture of velvety fragrance. The name "Lower Mutt." to inusi' who know the place, brings a picture of beautiful gardens and homes, shops, and many large lactones in garden settings, a rapidlyglowing and prosperous place. What would the name "Lower Hutt" mean to those wiio know it not I "Lower" conveys the impression of being either a depressed or inferior place, and the word "Hutt" the opposite to "Mansion." No wonder that overseas principals of big firms have suggested that a more important place should be selected to place their New Zealand branches in. Even when "Upper Hun" approaches the .size ol "Lower Hull" the adjective will still he derogative. "I'etone" once called up a picture of an odiferous meat works and railway workshops. The workshops have moved, the smells are not *o evident, and now the name pictures many commodities of widespread use. I'etone is historical too. What does com use the visitor is where Petone ends and Lower Hint begins. All this is leading up to the suggestion that there should he one I city in the lower Valley, and one name for it. One name for the ci'y j would not. mean the abolition of the existing names lor the two districts, i just as Waterloo.* N'aenae. and Taita j retain their names in state of being 1 in 'Lower Hutt City." A new- j over-ail name is most desirable, and j 1 ..in hold enough to suggest one j "Hutone City." Simple to spell. 1 with a .Maori flavour, not duplicated \ In or out of New Zealand, and con- ; sitting of equal letters from both J places. ' j I think thai amalgamation should ] take place lust, as come it must, tor 1 | remember that in many directions i we are already amalgamated -one j Ca:- board. Lower Board. River i Hoard, etc. The next wfll he ;i i Metropolitan Drainage Hoard. Great- 1 vr cfliciency and economy would he j the outcome of one city itriminislra- 1 Hon under one name. "Hutone City." j I am. etc., f 11. V. HORLOR. t 111 II \ ALLEY CARNIVAL (To the Editor.) • Sir.
