TOO MANY CONFERENCES

(To the Editor.) Sir. —It seems to me that there Is far 100 much time taken up I had almost written wasted! in New Zealand in conferences. We are constantly reading of a conference ol tin;;, that, or ili" other hody being held, and we sometimes wonder if the linn- spent a I these conferences could not he spent to better advantage in solid work. There are far too main interruptions to what may be called Hi" "rhythm" of work, and they arc no! all caused by striking unionists. There is the financial aspect too. Most delegates to a conference have their expenses paid by the body which they represent, thus adding to costs, and iliai money has eventually lo come mil ol the pockets of consumers ol goods and services. Large conferences, too, mean the hooking up ol much of the available accommodation at hotels and hoard-ing-house;;, causing inconvenience to legitimate tra\ ellers. Conleiv nets sometimes provide linl" more chan a holiday ;it someone else's expense! It is doubtful if many of them in actual results compensate for the money spent. Ami at a lime when we arc being told ot the need of increased production solid work seems to be more necessary than many conferences.—— I am, etc.. TOO MI'CH TALK.
