Upper Hutt Factories

EFFECT OK POWER CITS STANDBY PLANTS DISCUSSED At the last meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, during a discussion on the power shortage. Mr. J. Purvis stated that the cuts were seriously affecting some factories in Upper Hutt. There were two cuts each day—from 5.30 to 9.30 a.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m.—-and the loss of two hours' work a day was a serious loss to the businesses. He asked that a change in the hours be made to cause less inconvenience. The supply engineer, Mr. Horn, explained that, there were farmers in the district, and the hours of cuts had been fixed primarily to suit the milking hours. It was decided that the supply engineer go into the question of making one of the cuts during the luncheon

hour so sis to cause less inconvenience to the factories.

Standby Plants

Later in the meeting Mr. Purvis urged that the standby plant at Trenlbam military camp should be used to supply the camp, thereby relieving the ordinary supply, and that the standby plant at the racecourse should be used for industries. Mi. J. B. Yaldwyn: "It is an astonishing thing that every standby plant in New Zealand under the control | of the Government is not being run.j Why?"

Mr. Horn: "The reason Is probably economic."

It was decided that the Minister of Works and the Minister of Defence should he asked for information regarding the standby plants at Trentham.
