(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. Mr. Nash) stated at Waterloo on the 24th inst. that ‘‘9o per cent, of the doctors were accepting ihe 7/C rate.” In the “Evening Post” of the 25th inst. he states that this was incorrect, but goes on to assert that “50 per cent, of the doctors accepted a direct payment on the fee for service basis.” Assuming this figure to be correct, the inference Mr. Nash attempts to convey is that 50 per cent, of the doctors are honestly co-operating with the Government’s Social Security scheme. Mr. Nash avoids mention of the fact that a considerable proportion—probably the majority—of his “cooperating 50 per cent.” are collecting i token payment of 3/- or more iirect from their patients, who are bus in no better case than those ,vlio pay their doctor 10/6 and collect their own ’7/6 refund. I think .that if Mr. Nash were iware of the true position he would be the last to claim that doctors aci"ng as above are genuinely co-operat-ng with the Government. —I am, etc.,
