Congestion in Court
OVERCROWDING AT HUTT PLANS FOR POLICE STATION The fact that one sitting- of the Magistrate's Court a fortnight in Lower Hutt is not sufficient to deal with all the cases ottering and that the accommodation at the courthouse is hopelessly inadequate was again obvious last Wednesday. Two Magistrates were sitting, and the Court accommodation was considerably overtaxed. The witnesses' room was so overcrowded that some people had to stand outside in the rain, while lawyers waiting for cases to come on had to crowd into the small public office. In an effort to bring about an improvement in the position Mr. L. F. Rothwell, a member of the council of the Wellington' District Law Society, is seeking the support of the Society in making representations to the Justice Department. NEW POLICE STATION The police station at Lower Hutt which is totally inadequate for the city's requirements, will be replaced by a modern building as soon as finality has been reached regarding the site. The Police Department, it is said, is ready to go ahead with the building immediately this point is settled.
It will be remembered that the City Council recently proclaimed land for the Barraud Street extension, and portion of the present police station site is on the line of the proposed road.
