High School Fete

—_<s» SIR PATRICK DUFF'S TALK STRIKING DRILL DISPLAY The annual fete of the Hutt, Valley High School on Saturday afternoon was a great success despite rain which fell during the early stages. Fortunately the weather cleared later in the day, and it was possible for the pupils to give an exhibition of physical culture. The headmaster, Mr. J. N. Millard, and a crowd of helpers kept things running smoothly. Stalls and sideshows did brisk business, and the School Boys' Band provided some stirring music. Among the official visitors were Sir Patrick Duff (High Commissioner for the United .Kingdom), and Lady Duff, ,Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Andrews (mayor and mayoress of Lower Hutt) and Mrs. W. Nash. Mr. H. G. Calvert, president of the Parents' Association, in introducing the High Commissioner, said that the fete, which was organised by; the parents, was the 20th held by the School. The proceeds would go towards commemorating the coming-of-age of the school next year. Excellent work had been done by the secretary, Mr. S'pepncer, who gave up a week each year to the work of organising the function. They were also indebted to Mr and Mrs Millard Need of Religion. Sir Patrick Duff, opening his speech in humorous vein, went on to remind the boys and girls that when they left school they would find life an adventure, and they would need a background of religion if they were to become useful citizens. "For certain understandable but melancholy reasons," said Sir Patrick, "religion is not in the school curriculum, but boys and girls will need to acquire it if they are to make the most of their lives in the service of God and their fellowmen."

An outstanding display of physical culture was given by the pupils during the afternoon. The girls, under the direction of the.sports mistress, Miss P. Greenslade, presented build-ing-up exercises, traditional continental and Scottish dances, and a rhythmic Maori lpve lilt and stick game. The boys, directed by the sports master, Mr. G. Delamore, illustrated how the body can be built up by games and exercises, and closed an impressive display with the School initials outlined in a live formation. Three hearty cheers for Sir Patrick Duff were given by the pupils.
