HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT

An excellent knd varied programme was presented by the pupils of the Hutt Valley High - School at their annual concert for three nights last week. The orchestra and the gifts' choir each rendered pleasing numbers under the baton of Mr. I. Hills, and the boys provided some excellent negro melodies in costume with banjo-mandolin accompaniment under the direction of Mr. Dalgleish. The Brass Band under the baton of Mr. Tom Grey, has become an outstanding feature of the High School J and their varied numbers at this -qncijrt were no QKception to ;thje' high standard the boys have maintained for many years under their veteran instruction. A saxophone $jy R. Dawson with piano accompaniment by Ivan Lawson, and the 'cello solo by Shirley Lister and accompanied by Ruth Surtees, gave further proof of the musical talent among the scholars. The piano soloist, Mary Sayers, who also played some of the choir accompaniments gave a delightful rendering of " Jesu, Joy of My Soul" (J. S. Bach)). A group of girls, dressed in Maori costume, gave a clever exposition of tho Poi Dance under the leadership of Rea Love, and the Swedish Folk Dance, descriptive of the different movements in weaving, was very gracefully carried out. The instrumental quartette—W. McLauchlan, J. Shrubsall, T. Carru tiiers, and W. Stevens —displayed excellent talent. For the first time the Wurlitsser organ was played in public by one of the pupils of the school when M* Nicoison gave a very pleasing performance of k'tainer's Fantasia. The concert concluded with an amusing one act play, "The Master Key," the cast was well selected and the climax well concealed until the fall of the curtain. Those taking part were Marie Pescini, Mercia King, Ivan Lawson, Bernice Collard, Mervyn Grallam and Joan McDougall.
