Rugby Notes

OLD TIMERS DAY The second annual Old Timers day was held on Saturday last. Fortunately the weather qleared about mid-day and all the events excepting the Married versus Single game were got off, in fine weather. « ~.te Old Timers match was preceded by line, place and drop kicking competitions and fifty yard races for forwards and backs. The main event of the day was of course the match between two teams of old timers, The game was much more interesting than last years when old timers play ed present day players. On Saturday the teams were evenly matched as the score — 8 all—indicated. Some of the players showed really good form while their condition lasted. Bill Peck demonstrated just how to get the ball in the lines out and Reg and Jim Feeney showed the present generation how to tackle. Bill Mac Lea, Rob McKay and Stan Russell showed glimpses of their old form and at times revealed quite good combination. Merv. Hunt surprised many by his form. No doubt he was out to demonstrate to his Sixth grade boys just how to play the game. Leo Fawcett, who incidentally was the oldest player on the field (he shaded Rob McKay by a year) was another "coach taking part. He too was in good fettle. Alex Wilson (another coach) retains his speed remarkably well. Roy and Herb. Hinton, who journeyed down from Taranaki and Hawkes Bay respectively gave a good account of themselves, as also did Bill Adams who made a special trip for the match. Bert Ross, Ron Douglas, Joe Beagle, Steve Hobbs, Bob and Jack Saulbrey Johnny Phillips, E. Pilcher, P. Wooland were other old timers noticed. In addition there were many who are still taking an active part in the game or who have just finished playing. It was interesting to see the team led out on the field by Jim McGurk, the first man to captain a Hutt side (this was in the year 1910). Present at the match also was Mr. Mot Welch, the first president of the Club He and Mr. McGurk were introducto the gathering after the match by the president of the Club, Sir Alexr ander Roberts, who called j upon Mr. Welch to present the trophies won during the day. There was a very big gathering of past and presentday players and many old acquaintances were renewed. Phil Gamby's capable band enlivened the proceedings with popular music. The smooth running of the proceedings reflect great credit on the Old Timers committee and the work of the secretary, Mr. R. Wiclcham. Next years event is already being looked for-
