The Hutt News Wednesday, November 29, 1944 FOUR APPEALS
Firstly, the Hutt Valley R.S.A. is appealing to the public for funds to build new premises. As the official guardian oL" the welfare of local returned men, the Hutt Valley R.S.A. is fully entitled to seek public support: for this project to suitably house its organisation. We commend them for their timely enterprise in so doing. Secondly, and we think unfortunately, a further appeal has incorporated with, or added to this Premises Appeal with the result that the question o£ the War Memorial—the form it should take —its location its very ownership—has been dragged into the arena of public and even parochial debate at a time when this war s dead are not yei numbered. The sincerity o£ those R.S.A. members who conceived and sponsored this scheme goes without saying, but the decision reydidinj. this District War Memorial must of right, be the prerogative of <• much larger and more representative body citizens than tin local R.S.A. Executive and theii supporters on two or three loca bodies. This brings us to the third r peal, which is an appeal by thi -"Hutt News" to the R.S.A. ti drop this question of " W T ar Mem orial" and proceed with, a straight out appeal for funds to acquir< their own new premises. Fourthly we appeal to the pub lie to support this "Premise: Appeal" as a grateful gesture t< the lads who return, leaving tin wider, broader and deeper issu< of our tribute to the dead to b< decided when the debt we owe— or will owe —is known in full.
