Plumbers and Ballot
At Monday's meeting of the City Council, Cr. E. P. Hay, chairman of the By laws and Health Committee presented the case of- the Hutt Valley Master Plumbers' Association, who drew attention to the inclusion of certain of its members and their staffs in recent, mobilisation orders and ballots, and expressed fears that suflioienl competent tradesmen may not be left to adequately attend to the plumbing needs of the populace. Cr. Dudding pointed out that the health of the community was vitally concerned in retaining sufficient of these tradesmen to service the district. They were as essential as the doctors in attending to the health of the people. Twelve of the 2 4 in the city were now engaged on defence work. Plumbing may quite well be regarded as an essential industry. Cr. Muir pointed out that the next ballot will include men of 35 years of age. They were just as vital as the first line of defence. ( It was decided to bring the objections under the 'notice of the, National Service Department and point out the necessity of taking steps to safeguard the health of the
community by arranging that a suffi cient number of tradesmen in this industry remain available for the carrying out of necessary maintenance work.
