INTER-SCHOOL DEBATE

Tlic annual debute for the "Gow Scroll" took place at Rongotai College last, week between Hut.L Valley

High School (the holders) and Rongotai College. The subject was "That the Abolition of the Proficiency Qualification has been detrimental to the work of the Secondary Schools," Rongotai taking the affirmative and I-lutt Valley the negative. The teams wertf: For the Hutt, C. Wong (leader). Rosalie Leslie and Margaret Orr, and for Rongotai: J. Gardiner (leader), D. Heron and B. Renner. After a very interesting and keenly contested debate. the judge, Professor I. Gordon, of Victoria University College, awarded the scroll to the Hutt Valley High School, placing C. Wong first and Rosalie Leslie and B. Renner second, equal. The judge commented 011 the able way in which each speaker had dealt with the subject, and congratulated the winning team on the manner in which they had put their case and refuted the arguments of the opposition.
