At last week's meeting bf the Lbwer Huit Chamber of Commerce' surprise was, expressed that Dr. B. J. 1 Dudley has l?een refused pernilssion py . the Government 'to build shops and offices on a block of land in High Street, oh the ground that the town was already fully supplied with business premises.' It- was decided to write to Dr. Dudley stating that in the opinion of the chamber it was m6st desirable that such premises should be erected to meet the rapidly-growing demand for shops and offices in the centre of the town. i As Sunday next will be the Sunday nearest to the second anniversary of the outbreak of war, the King has requested ' that it be observed as a day of prayer. There will be no evening services in the Protestant Churches and a United Citizens' Service "will be held in the King George Theatre fit 7 p.m. The September meeting of the local branch of the League of Mothers will be held on Thursday, 11th September, at 2 p.m., in the Horticultural Hall, Laings Road, when Mrs. Coventry, of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, will be the speaker. All women are cordially invited to attend the meeting. The "Victory Bazaar," opened yesterday by the Mayoress (Mrs. J. W. Andrews) in the Salvation Army Hall, Laings Road, concludes tonight (Wednesday). The evening takes the form of. a "Bridal Giljf Evening," and a programme will be provided by juvenile artists. All ticket holders will receive a gift from the "bride's glory , box."
