All Fool's Day was not overlooked on Monday last, when many passersby fell victims to an innocent looking lady's handbag, apparently full of money, but securely tied to a street grating near the old Hutt Bridge. Those in the joke added to the embarrassment of the victims by voicing their amusement in unmuffled tones, especially wTieii motorists, spotting the "find," suddenly applied their brakes, making day hideous and returning to their car to curse their |nquisitiveness. The Salvation Army have commenced a campaign, "The Crusade of the, Flaming Hearts." Special services, extra open-air meetings, and half nights of prayer will be held, and will continue until Whit-
Harvest thanksgiving services are being held at all the Anglican churches in Lower Hutt on Sunday. There are special preachers—at the parish church, at U a.m., the Rev. F. C. Long, secretary to the New Zealand Board of Missions, and in the evening the Rev. W. Langton, vicar of Kilbirnie. At St. Paul s Church the visiting clergy will be the Rev. D. C. Bates and Rev. H. S. Kenney, vicar of Petone. Gifts of vegetables, fruit, etc., are taiven to the Boys' Home.
The monthly meeting of the local branch of the League of Mothers will be held in the Horticultural Hall, Laings Road, on Thursday, April 11th, at' 2 p.m., when Miss Lorinier, B.Sc., of the City Council laboratries, will speak on "Food Values." All women are cordially invited to attend, particularly mothers of young children.
The Mayoress, Mrs. J. W. Andrews, will be pleased to receive the names of any ladies willing to assist as collectors on Friday, when a street day will be held by the Wellington Patriotic Committee on behalf of the Metropolitan Patriotic Fund to provide comforts and parcels for the members of His Majesty's Forces going overseas. Donations of 1/- or more will be recognised by a badge.
The Lower Hutt Civic Band, under the conductorship of Mr. W. L. Richards, rendered a programme of music in Riddiford Park on Sunday last. Despite the somewhat cold afternoon a fair attendance listened to the following programme: "God Defend New Zealand," "Black- Diamond" march, "Bohemian Girl" selection, "We're Going to Hang the Washing on the Siegfried Line." "Paddy's Patrol," "American Beauties" selection. "Say Nineties" waltz, "Bells of Aberdovy," "South of the Border," "Federation March," "Garland of Flowers," "God Save the King."
The Rev. Eric Ratts, of Gisborne, commences his ministry at the local Baptist Church, Puriri Street, on Sunday next. The morning service will be in the form of an induction service, when the Rev. H. E. Edridge will give the charge to the new minister. This will be followed by a Communion service, conducted by Mr. Ratts. At the evening service iv\r. Ratts will be the preacher.
The Rev. Harold T. Peat, who has accepted a call to a church in Dun. edin, will conclude his Lower Hutt ministry next Sunday. At 11 a.m. his theme will be "The Hunger of the Soul," and at 7 p.m. he will preach his farewell sermon. He and his family are to be accorded a farewell social in Wesley Hall on April j Ith at N p.m. His many friends are invited to aH these functions.
