Stout Notes

(By "KAMAHI.") *

(No. 12/39.)

Undeterred by the prospect of bad weather, twenty-five Scouters and lady Cubmasters arrived from Manawatu district on a recent week-end to make a return visit to our district. Cricket and tennis were played after refreshments had been served. A most festive evening was spent at Ist Lower Hutt. Hall, where the Rover" crew had arranged a dance. The bright frocks of the ladies were an effective contrast to the men's Scout kit, and the variously coloured Group scarves. The Rover orchestra did an excellent job of work and local Scouters acted two short humorous sketches. Harking back to the Sydney Jamboree, a set of Maori stick games was performed, together with some of the hakas which so thrilled Australian audiences. Sunday morning's attendance at church numbered about fifty, and the Rev. W. Hurst (himself a Rover Scout) preached a fine sermon. Tlie lessons were read by Rover Scouts." After lunch about ten carloads of Scouters headed for Heretauuga, where members of the Jamboree team were waiting to show them over the Jamboree site. Returning to Lower Hutt,'where a welcome ■ afternoon tea awaited, Manawatu and Hutt Valley Scouters sported on "Aorangi's" lawns until the visitors' bus arrived to take them home. As "Hawkeye" (the leader of the Manawatu party) said, a real tie of friendship is growing up between the two districts as a result of these visits. PATKOIi LEADERS TAKE NOTE! The Patrol Leaders' training night,, arranged for 3rd April, has been put off until April 17th, as we are to do a display in aid of the Centennial appeal the following night. Ydu will all be reminded of the altered date in good time. Yes, we've been given another job to do, and this time it's a bigger one. The display we gave during the Physical week is being extended considerably, and the Wolf Cubs have their part to do as well. Information about the. display, concering the part each Troop will play, has been circulated, and combined practices will be arranged in due course. Remember those two points I mentioned before as needing improvement —punctuality and marching? Watch them this time. - It's the little things like that which count. One Saturday afternoon this month I was chatting to a Scouter about Troop matters, and he showed me a couple of sketch-maps and reports which had been made on a trip to Lowry Bay. They were splendid. A tremendous amount of work and thought had been put into tlie'm, and the reports covered the activities very fully. The ._chaps who did them haven't yet got to the second class stage, so their prospects for the mapping for first class are excellent. All Scouters (which means Cubinasters as well) will gather at Ist Lower Hutt Hall this coming Saturday for a- conference. Opening at 3 p.m., with a s break for tea, th 3 conference will continue until 9 p.m., the whole proceeding concluding with a camp-fire. There will be ample time and opportunity for frank discussion on any problem, and for any explanations which may be required about district jr Jamboree matters. A Word to the Scouts. —Yo ir Scouter has to attend this conference on Saturday. What about gathering your Patrol together and going for an outing or doing a job for some one? Make out a report on what you do and send it in. It's a good chance to show just what you're made of. Get to it! —"Kamahi," Dist. Publicity Scouter.
