The Hutt Valley High School held its annual swimming sports at j.uddiford Baths last Thursday/ when two records were-.established. In the 66 2-3 yards open championship M. The final swimming carnival of the Wellington season, conducted by the Wellington centre at Riddrford Baths on Thursday night, was not largely, attended. The racing throughout was keen and close. A feature of the carnival was the line backstroke swimming of Jack \vnliams, who, in retaining his 100 yards Wellington championship, established a new Wellington record, swimming the distance in in 72 3-5, which reduced the previous record by l-3sec. K. Spry set a Wellington record for the 100 yards breaststroke, clocking 77 2-5, I which is 1 3-ssec. outside the New Zealand record. .The temperature of the water was 64deg. | There were five Wellington centre championships decided. • F. Pennington retaining his 440 yds. I'ree- ! style title, and O. Vaughan his 100 yards intermediate championship. ' The girls' 100- yards intermediate | honours went to a new champion j | in Miss C. Alexander, Wellington j women's club, and the 100 yards women's championship was won by i Miss W. Pritchard, Hutt, also a new champion, Miss S. Gotlieb, the pre- j vious holder, not defending her title. Miss Pyitchard, who . was swimming top form, also annexed the women's 66 2-3 yards handi- j cap. Vaughan held a slight lead over the first lap, which he increased to two yards over the second , lap. He held an advantage .of four yards in the final lap. Major swam well to, hold Harvey for second placing. 440 Yards Wellington Centre Freestyle Championship: F. Pennington (Wellington), holder, 1; J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay), 2; P. Malthus (Wellington), 3. The field got away to a good start, and kept close together for four laps, when Pennington held a slight lead from • Blakeley and Malthus. The first 100 yards took 68, and the 220 yards 2.45. Pennington continued to increase his advantage at eacli lap. -Malthus replaced Blakeley in second place with three laps to go. Pennington never looked like being" caught, and won by five yards. In a close finish for second Blakeley replaced Malthus, beating him by a yard. 100 Y-ards breaststroke Handicap: K. Spry, scr, 1; I. These two had a great duel to within 15 yards of the finish, when Williams, swimming strongly, wore Watson down and won with little to spare. Williams swam a fine race, finishing strongly to establish a new \vellfngton centre .record, reducing the previous record of 74 1-5 by 1 3-5. 100 Yards Relay Handicap (three a-side): Karori (Adams, Easter-"" brook-Smith, Mason), 9sec., 1; Wellington Women (Misses M. Dickie, Alexander, Walling), 14sec, 2; Hataitai (Ballard, Marshall, Mclnnes), 12sec, 3. In a great finish Karori won by a. touch, three yards separating second and third. The women's team swam a fine race and were rather unlucky not to get in the touch first. Water Polo: Wellington beat the Rest by 5 goals to u. Mr. V. Allan was the referee.
