The Hutt News WEDNESDAY,, SEPTEMBER 21, 1938 Local and General

A meeting under the' auspices of the Pan-Pacific Women's Association is being held in St. James's small hall, 011 Tuesday afternoon, with the purpose of inaugurating a study circle to enable women to become acquainted with the work of this movement. As its primary object is " to strengthen the bonds of peace, by promoting a bettei' understanding and .friendship among the women of all Pacific countries,", it is expected that such a group will appeal to all thinking women. Further aprticulars of this meeting are advertised.

A special "Bring iuiJ Buy" Day, arranged by the members of St. James's Guild, is to be held 011 Friday next at St. James's Hall 10.0 a.m. to 3.45 p.m. This effort is in aid of the special fund to pay the passage money of the Rev. W. E. W. Hurst from Ireland. There will be stalls for Plain and Fancy Needlework, cakes, sweets, produce, plants, knick-knacks and Morning and Afternoon Tea will be provided. In the afternoon at 3.45 Mrs (). S. Hoymaim is kindly introducing her "Punch and Judy Show" —a show on totally new and) delightful lines—which will be much enjoyed and appreciated by all. St. James's Parishioners are looking forward to the visit of the Bishop of Wellington who is to preach on next Sunday Morning in connexion with the Diocesan Ccntentary Appeal. There is also an opportunity of meeting Canon Malcolm at St. James's Hall on Monday evening when the Campaign will be officially launched in the parish. All Bishop's Helpers are especially asked to be present. Mr D. C. Meldrum reports that the rainfall recorded at Lower llutt during August .1938, amounted to 4.20 inches in U days; the maximum fall of 1.15 inches was recorded on the ]Bth August. The rainfall was 27 per cent, below the average. Air. Nash will speak in the Horticultural Hall, Lower Hutt on Wednesday September 2.lst at S p.m. and afterwards will tour through the Dominion, speaking, among other places, at Dannevirke, Eketahuna, HuntervrJle, Kimbolton, Wellsford, Whangarei, Fairlic and Temuka returning to Hutt at the end of the first week in October. He will address meetings at Woburn, Lower Hutt and I'etone, one of his addresses being broadcast throughout the Dominion.

The Lower Hutt Temperance League, representative ot' all the churches and organizations having as their object uplift of their fellows, has organised a Great After-Church Hally to be held in the Methodist Church on Sundaynext at 8.115 p.m. The Speaker will lie Air. H. W. Alilner, General Superintendent of the New Zealand Alliance. This meeting will be the Jirst shot to be fired in connection with the forthcoining poll. To this rally everyone who can get in is invited to attend, especially the youth on whom a big responsibility rests at the present time. The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the Residential Nursery was presided over by Airs. Frank Campbell. It was decided to hold a "bring and buy" on September USUIi and a musical afternoon at the home of Airs. Wright in October. Summer Time will start on Sunday next, September 25th when clocks will be advanced thirty minutes. Summer Time will remain in operation for seven months until the last Sunday in April.
