Beauty Notes

By Caroline P. Ward.

The acid test for beautiful shoulders and backs comes When they are displayed in a low-cut frock. However lovely the frock may be the effect is ruined if scraggy shoulders protrude above it. It is also ugly to have a back that is too well-covered with fat, especially if it comes between the •iVn'Jor blades; in people that are •'..ot-so-young," this usually pushes the shoulders into a rounded position j and then the trouble begins! Children at school who habitually sit with Tounded shoulders are just asking for trouble, although the ill-effects may not become paramount until middle-age. Drooping shoulders push the chest forward, thereby making less lung span, then the weight o.f the ribs is constantly on the hips, obliterating the waistline, the abdominal muscles are relaxed and lose their "tone," and in middleage all this adds up to a complete sagging of the oTgans, a complaint known as Visceroptosis; lam not so pessimistic as to suggest that every woman or child with rounded shoulders will sooner or later become a victim of visceroptosis, because those shoulders can be cured by making the shoulder muscles so supple that they can hold the bones of the ami and shoulder in place. I can imagine a word of protest arising at this point from fortunate readers who already have lovely shoulders and never think that it is necessary to worry about fatness or stiffness But to maintain a perfectly healthy beauty ALL the muscles in the body must be kept in an A 1 condition, including the muscles of the shoulders. The exercises I am giving this week are to loosen the shoulders and arms and after a little practise you will have taken yet another step towards improving the grace of all your movements, in your games and especially in walking. These exercises are undoubtedly the best you can do since they are scientifically constructed. Having been approved of by the leading medical men of to-day as being especially suitable for women and children they now form part of the most popular system of physical exercises, being enjoyed by no less than 142,000 women in the British Empire( including New Zealand) and elsewhere. To the musi c of a quickstep this is how the exercise for shoulders is done:—(feet straight). All the time be careful to pull in the chin. Roll the shoulders up and back, pulling back once, then a little further. Do this four times, completing four bars of music. Bring the arms forward, at shoulder level, palms facing one another, take them out to the sides (shoulder level) and pull them back on-e, then a little further. Repeat four times, completing four bars of music. Clap hands right overhead, then at the back—clapping the backs of the hands and not the palms. Do this eight times, completing four bars of music.

Circle the arms right up and back eight times and circle them forwards eight times, being careful to keep the rest of the body steady. This completes another eight bars o.f the quickstep. To finish circle the arms back and then forward another eight times to complete one 'chorus of music. To do all of these exercises at once may be rather tiring, so rest a moment if you feel out of breath and then continue. Would you like exercises for any other part of your body? If you would or if you have health and figure problems over which you want help write to: — Miss C. P. Ward. Care of the "Hutt News."
