SWIMMING.

CENTRE CARNIVAL. VISIT or OVERSEAS SWIMMERS. This season lias been one out of the ordinary for swimmers in the Wellington district and they have taken full advantage of the glorious sunshine. The ! Hutt Club have so far had a very successful season at various carnivals. At the recent Centre Carnival the club; n:embers did very well. R. Tuppea was again successful in defending his diving championship but he had to work hard to do it. H. Tremewan a young diver of promise, was a very close aoeond and with more practice and training should be a winner next year. U. Liver was third and showed a decided improvement. This year's standard was a big improvement on last year '.s performance. In the ladies' section the Valley gained iirst and second in the 100 yards Wellington Ladies' Championship, Miss Campbell swimming right back to form to win easily from Miss Pritchard who was well ahead of the other competitors. A. Somervill was unlucky in the 50 yards Men's Championship becoming pocketed between Claridge and Blakeley and could not get out of it and iinished second to I). Plunk in slow time. ; The breaststroke team swam a good second in the Worser Bay Banner K-ace and did not disgrace themselves in a iield of eight. The water polo teams have had a fair number of successes and the interest created in this branch of sport has been surprising. Quite a n-rowd of enthusiasts turned up to the baths I every Tuesday to see tnese games and also some very keen contests in the club events that are put on on these evenings. INTEK-CLUB NIGHT. On March 3 the club is staging an 'inter-club night at the Kiddiford Baths, when a contest for the Nash Cup will be held. This is the iirst event of this kind that has been staged in Wellington and should create great interest amongst the various clubs. | The competition calls for a team of seven men who will participate in live events of a varied nature and all oft' | | the scratch mark and the team with the greatest number of points will hold the cup for twelve months. The contest will be staged by the Hutt Club each year. From ail accounts there will be seven teams competing for this trophy which also includes water polo. Another event which will create a lot of interest and amusement is a relay race between the Petone Kowing Club and the veterans of the Hutt Club. Already there hav e been training swims by the veterans who will be represented by W. A. Bousiield, H. E. Edwards, ' N. N. Oldershaw, A. Valentine senr, and W. Garrett Three of these prominent members have been having some sly training and when the handicappei puts in an appearance they shut up their training efforts VISIT OF WORLD CHAMPIONS Another gathering of interest will be on March 13 when the world famous French swimmer. Jean Taris, accompanied by i'oussard another 1 renchmaii, and Chang Hing Kwok of China will put in an appearance. Taris is the Olympic games -WO metres champion and is a personality of outstanding ability. After seeing lioy Charlton in action in Paris he decided that he would become a world's champion and with training and a big heart did so at the last Olympic Games. He swam Buster Crabbe of America to a touch in one of the most thrilling Jiuishes ever seen at the games. Poussard is a diver of outstanding ability whose diving will be an education. ICwok, the Chinese representative, is a breaststroke swimmer who has hac a successful tour of Australia. Supporters and Hutt residents will bo pleased to know that two of the club members have been selected to compete at the national championships at Auckland next week, representing Wellington. Miss P. Price will bo defending her Dominion diving title and A. Somervell has been nominated in the two sprint events, while live of the other members of the club form the water polo team, The public generally are urged to keep Tuesday, March 5 free and to support the club on that date by turning up at the Kiddiford Baths. CLL'B EVENING. Last Tuesday's club evening at the Kiddiford Baths was another good even--1 ing's swimming. The following are the results: — 331 yards school boys' handicap.— 1!. Milne 1, G. Wood '1, ,T. Oldershaw 3. This was a very close finish, the scratch boy L. Bousiield a touch away fourth. 150 yards ladies' Beasley Cup Handicap. First distance: W, Pritchard 1, W. Campbell 2, D. Milne 3. Miss Pritchard won rather easily by Jive yards. 100 yards breaststroke handicap: B. Meek 1, J. Logie G. Hay 3. Time SSsecs. A very close race, a foot covering the whole field of five at the finish. j(j(j --3 yards uandicap: J. Waitai 1, H. Wright '2, T. Berry 3. Time 44sees. Waitai won by a good yard and his swim was the best he has done. >50 yards ladies handicap: M. Eraser (Wellington) 1, M. Morton 2, E. Turner 3. Time 36 sees. Another good finish by a touch. In this event the veterans, who have been training hard, showed a surprising turn of speed and won by half a yard. The Wellington Ladies' Club weie* the guests of the club and were entertained afterwards in the club room at the rear of the baths. The club members who represented the club at the championships did not disgrace themselves. ; A. Somervell was a shade unlucky in not qualifying in the .100 championship final. He fouled the lane rope and this put him outof the final. His swim of 67 sees .was an exceedingly good one, as also was his swim in the 50 yards scratch race. A. Valentine swarn into third place in the final of tho 100 inter-club handicap ,after a win in the heart and second in the semi-final. H. Warburton also qualified in the semi-final but could go no further Miss. M. Price was again successful in winning the ladies' diving championship, her diving being of good average standard, NASH CUP. The following team will represent the club in the Nash Cup contest: —60 yards scratch race: A. Somervell, A. .Valentine, G. Balfour. Gli 2-o yards scratch breaststroko race: L. Deans, J. Logic and I. Palmer. Dive: A. Somervell, L. Deans, I. Palmer. Relay: A. Somervell, I Palmer, A. Valeijtine. Polo: J. Logie, G. Balfour, L. Deans A, Warburton. Teams from Lyall Bay, Maranui, Wellington, Varsity and possibly one or two of the minor clubs will be competing and a good night's swimming should "be the result. The club is to be congratulated on promoting this contest as it i s the first to be started in Wellington and should create a lot of interest both from a club point of view and the public, and will virtually decide who is the champion all-round club in Wellington. WALKEirAND. HALL CUP. The club will be represented in the ■Walker and Hall Cup 500 yards flying squadron race at Te Aro Baths on March 2, by the following who will have to swim off for positions in the team: A. .Somervell, I. Palmer, A. Valentine, G. Balfour, H. Wright, N. Lines, H. Warburton Swimming this season has been very keen as can be seen by the records that were broken at the national -championships. The most outstanding is L. Smith taking nearly 3 seconds off his 220 yards breast-stroke time, his time being oniin 1 l-ssec. Miss N. Leydon who is a cripple, having no use in her legs owing to infantile paralaysis when a child, also broke her -1-10 yards record by one second. This was a most remarkable swim for a lady who suffers from a disability.
