LOWER HUTT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The first meeting of the new council of Jhe Lower Hutti vphambet-of Commer,ce was held jiast Thursday evening, Mr W. H. Smith presiding over a

good attendance.

A motion, of. symjpathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. T. Scholes, a former member of the Chamber, was passed in silence.

. Considerable discussion took place regarding the garden work for unemploy ed 'being subsidised by the Relief Comjmittee. Mr Reeves, who is the representative of the Hutt Valley Producers' Association, said that there was a feeling among the, market gardeners that the crops from these gardens were to be sold in the open .market or hawked round the district in competition with bone fide market gardeners.

After considerable discussion the following resolution was passed "That the Lower Hutt Relief Committee be written to pointing out that the Chamber has been notified that there is a possibility of vegetables produced by subsidised labour .being sold in competition to the produce of the market gardeners and asking the Relief Committee to advise if this possibility has been realised."

It was decided to approach the business .people of the town with a -view to organising some effort to stimuli!

business during the period preceding Christmas. A sub-coninntjee consisting of Messrs Player, Arnold and Russell ,was set .iKP to report at the .next meeting on 6th October. ..-

The regular .meeting night was. fixed for the first Thursday int each month aud a general meeting will be called in October "■. ''

EPUNI TENNIS CLUB.

About 40 members and friends were

present at the opening, of the Epuni Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.

Mr J. G. Hanson, chairman of the school committee, in declaring the courts officially open, remarked that thought the membership of the cM) was small, there was ~no reason why its members should not be expert players, and he hoped that it would not be long before they were able to enter for the championships.

The cluib is to be affiliated this season with the Lower Hutt Lawn Tennis Sub-Association.

|In the challenge match which immediately followed the opening, Bpuni succeeded in beating memfbers of the Eastern Hutt Tennis Club.

A delicious afternoon tea.was dispensed by members of the cluib.

Following the official opening of * club, a successful dance was held in the schoolroom in the evening. Mr A. R. Mailman, pianist, supplying the music. The committeewas as follows: Misses E. Stead, S. Walker, T. Ensor, and Messrs A. E. Berryman; F. G. Skinner, B. Pilcher, E. Foster, A. Manderson, W. Tynan.
