LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough. Council was held on Monday evening. [Present Mayor (>Sir Alexander Roberts), Crs. A. Grierson, j. Mitchell, F. Campbell, A. E. Carver, J. JB.Boyd, I>. S. Patrick W. G r Meldrum and A. Mcßain.

The AiM.P-. Society wrote offering the Council the option of paying future instalments of interest and principal on monies borrowed from the Society inr steacl of being required to remit the

amounts to Sydney, and intimating thaj; the Society will be prepared to accept the amount in. WeJUjngton free of exchange to the Society, and would be final throughout the currency of the

loans

The Mayor moved that the offer be accepted as it would be very favourable to the Council, thereby saving 87/7 per cent exchange. Carried.

■ The King , George Theatre was granted permission to show pictures on Christmas night.

The Eltham Borough Council wrote submitting a scheme for the relief of

the unemployed and it was decided to support it.

T>h.e Fire Brigade report stated that for the month the Brigade had been called out on four occasions. The report stated that the attendance at all meetings of the Brigade continues to be good and that ail appliances are in good working order. The Town Clerk reported that Miss Huskisson had been appointed senior stenographer and that she commenced duties on the'Bth inst. The Town Clerk reported t-hat the Council had agreed to -grant Mr. Cottreli a lease of the corner of Ward and High Streets for the purpose of constructing a miniature golf, course, at a rental of £2 a week for six months with the right of renewal for another six months at the same rental. An application was made for permission to erect a cycle rack on the kerbside in front of Mr. Mason's recently erected building. On the motion of Cr. Mitchell seconded by Cr. the application .was refused, Cr. G-rierson dissenting. It -was decided to approach- the Unemployment Board to subsidise £1 for £1 up to £300 so t-aat all unemployed ■ men may be given work 'before ChTistmas. ■ Building permits to the value of £19-----180 were granted during the month, as compared with £40,159 for the corresponding month last year. '.-'■'• The custodian of the Baths reported that for the month of November the revenue amounted to £8/6/6 against £17/4/7 for the corresponding month last year. The admission was 471, as against 1438 for November last year. I Cr. Campbell remarked that the Baths were evidently suffering from the general depression. . The Librarian reported that foT the month of November 2062 books were taken out, 35 new books added, 8 new subscribers, 14 members withdrew; total number of subscribers 334: The Mayor reported that in regaTd ■to the proposed .increase in bus fares the department had agreed to retain the minimum charge of threepence and the concession tickets for children. Cr. Campbell stated that a better, system of appointing a licensing authority could be improved, as it was not right for ,the controlling body to be , actively engaged in transort service. It was decided to grant permission for 'holding a swimming carnival at the Eiddif ord Baths oh Christmas Day^
