HUTT VALLEY IMPROVEMENTS

An inspection of the various thoroughfares in the commercial centres and the residential areas give ample evidence of progress the enterprise shown adding much to the appearance and prestige of Lower Hutt and Petone. Those responsible for the improved aspects are entitled to the commendation and thanks of the conrniunity, which should endeavour to display gratitude in practical form, especially to those who have spent their capital to modernise shopping fronts, or otherwise add to the attractiveness of the boroughs to residents and visitors. This gratitude, combined with a sense of local patriotism, should prompt all Hutt Valley people, really interested in the boroughs' advance, to tirake all their purchases from local establishments, so far as is possible. There is no need to emphasise the beneficent circle this policy would create, and the fruits of it can be acquired with, those demanded in the city. Every penny spent in Wellington, which could have been spent equally woll in Petone and Lower Hutt, is an obstacle to Hutt Valley's advancement, and those who make isuch imprudent transactions have none but themselves to blame —if there is anything lacking in the outfitting and stock, of our retail premises or in their general appearance. The beginning of a new year is the season of good reteolutions and no better determination could be made by Hutt Valleyites than to spend Valley money in the Valley during the Christmas period and also during the next twelve months. Any old-time prejudice against local shopping, or misplaced confidence in the glamour of city emporiums, must be jettisoned, and a fair deal given to those local retailers striving to give of-their best service. Competition compels them to keep their charges on a reasonable basis, and if there was a time of too-high profits in /the Hutt Valley that day has passed. The more support given the more numerous will be their facilities to please their customeris, the more numerous will be the workers they can employ, the greater will be borough revenue, and the more stable will become house property values. If Lower Hutt and Petone people are loyal to the Hutt Valley, the advance made of recent years can. be excelled each year, enabling prosperity to be general and permanent, and enabling the boroughs to undertake costly scheme's. By helping each other we hf^lp ourselves and a year of, general preference to local establishments will enable the returns to present even a brighter stOTy.
