HUTT VALLEY MATTERS

OUR MEMBER'S ACTIVITY LOOKING WEIJL AFTER THE DISTRICT. The following questions and answers in reference to matters effecting this district were brought forward by the Hon. T. M. Wilford in the House of ast week: — Mr Wilford (Hutt) asked the Minister of Railways whether the Public Works Department intends to leave the quarry at McMeeking's Point, Gracefield Road, Lower Hutt in the condition in which it is at present; and whether he is aware that after the hillside was blasted vthe steam-navvy wastaken away without moving the loosened spoil and that, though the public shifted some of the mud, spoil, etc., since the recent rains the road is practically impassable?

The Right Hon. Mr Coates (Minister of Railways) replied. The Quarry at MeMeeking's Point, Graeefield Road, Lower Hutt, is under the control of the Railway Department. The Department is aware of the conditions at the quarry. The recent heavy rains brought down on to the road a considerable quantity of niud and slurry which will be removed as soon as men can be spared from the urgent repair on the Hutt line. Although the mua has narrowed the width of the road it is still passable. The-Department may be taking, further spoil from the quarry and on completion of operations the face will be left in a condition which will prevent a recurrence of the trouble complained of.

Mr Wilford (Hutt) asked the Minister of Education, whether it is proposed to institute a junior High School system in the Hutt Valley?

The Hon. Mr Wright (Minister of Education) replied. The suggestion that the Petone Technical School site should be extended will receive careful consideration. At the present time there is no need for extension. With regard to the future, I would refer the honourable gentleYnan to-my answer to his question on the Government's intentions with respect to the reorgan' isation of the school system. "
